Reply by laz41 on February 15, 2012 I have same error message, it feels like this is just a scam to buy ink only from HP at inflated prices. It's disgusting.
Printer Driver For Hp Photosmart C4480
So now what, I have to go buy a whole new printer & help destroy the environment by throwing this printer with glass scanner in trash b/c HP wont let us use ink from another manufacturer. They should be investigated for this. Igo map s windows certificates. And they also try to take over your whole desktop forcing software & license agreements to be installed to use the printer that I paid for.
You should smash it & youtube it for all of us.
I know this issue has been discussed endlessly, but I still cannot scan. I was following the instructions below (from Andrew) that I found archived on this message board: First, the CD that came with the printer does not have Snow Leopard compatible software on it, so throw it out. Since you have already installed that, here is what I would do. 1) If your device is connected via USB, disconnect it.
2) Go into the Print & Fax system preference, right click on the printer list, and select 'Reset printing system.' 3) Open /Applications/Hewlett-Packard/HP Uninataller.app and when you get to the Uninstall screen (the one where the button says uninstall) press and hold Shift-Control-Command-Option while you press the button. Say yes to the scary waring message. 4) Install version 2.2 of the Leopard Print driver bundle from Apple.com. This should give you Print and Scan (through the In-OS Scan Drivers). If you want to install HP Scan, then: 5) Install the full solution for the Photosmart C4680 from here. In either case, remember HP Scan Pro and HP Message Center are not compatible with Snow Leopard.

But Snow Leopard does contain a full feature Utility (HP Utility) for your device. Just trying to help. Andrew According to the Apple documentation, the Printer Driver Bundle that Andrew refers to also works for my printer. So,everything is going fine as (in Andrew's step 4) I install the Leopard Print Driver bundle. It is near the end of the installation (according to the progress bar), it is saying 'Running Package Scripts.' , and 'Install Time Remaining about a minute'. It stays like this for about 30 mins, then says Successful Installation!
So, what was that all about? Pressing onward, I successfully print.
But, scanning still does not work from Preview, Preferences Printer and Fax, Image Capture, or from the printer console. Also, 'HP Utility' which Andrew said would be there is not.

When I say that scanning does not work, let's take the specific example of Preview. Import from Scanner shows up as an option in Preview, and I can select my printer. However, the import window just says ' Trying to open scanner session.' , and it keeps trying for at least 30 minutes. What should I do? Try to reinstall the Printer Driver Bundle and hope that it finishes 'on time'?
Install the full solution for the Photosmart C4480 from the HP site? Macmini3,1 Intel, 2.0GHz, 2.0GB mem, 300GB disk, Mac OS X (10.6.6), Printer: HP Photosmart C4480; Internet: Airport to point-to-point wireless Posted on Jan 18, 2011 4:30 PM. First, it would not scan. Then the 'printer was offline.'
I have had many problems since the update to 10.6/10.5/10.4), with my HP Photosmart C8180 All-In-One. A great machine, as is my MacBook Pro (I've had Macs since the '80's). At first they worked together beautifully. Then the relationship started to go downhill, as so many do, when someone wants to 'fix' something that isn't broken, not sure who is to blame. Or maybe they just decided to go in different directions. Great for them, tough for the loyal customers who shelled out big bucks. They seem to get back together to work things out, but difficulties seem to arise with every ominous message from Software Update, that 'an update is available to be installed.'
I'm beginning to dread those. Yesterday I spent a couple of hours reading these posts and trying to figure out how to fix the non-scanning problem-again. I downloaded HP's stand-alone software update, but haven't tried it yet, but it may come to that.
Yesterday, by deleting the printer in Preferences, Print and Fax, checking for more updates (none-I had them all), turning off/unplugging everything (printer and computer), disconnecting USB, then reversing all that and adding back the printer-although MacBook did not really want to renew their relationship-took me several tries with the USB cord (it's supposed to just 'see' it and add it). I finally got it to all work fine, even to scan! That is, until this morning, less than 24 hrs. Later, when I wanted to print. Computer and printer had been on all night, but must have had a late-night tiff.
I got the message that the 'printer is offline'-Mac wasn't speaking to her-when it was turned on and connected (yes, I checked the power & USB-still plugged in). I was able to copy a document with it just fine! So, I turned off the aio and turned it back on again and it worked fine, both printing and scanning (from Preview). The BIG question is, for how long? Do I have to keep 'fixing' what should work seamlessly, again and again? The HP is a $300 machine connected to an Apple $1500 machine, and I expect everyone to keep the faith and keep them all working for me for more than a year or so!

Without my having to spend lots of time trying to be an IT person, which I'm not! And by the way, guys, I'd really love for my HP aio to be able to print from the IPhone 4 ($200) that I just bought, too! Have you ever considered that your customers might want backward compatibility? Is that too much to ask, considering the money we have spent on all these otherwise excellent products? Apple and HP, you are giving bad customer service in this regard. Jan 25, 2011 8:16 AM.
